AI-Enabled DICOM Data Migration: Precision in Practice

In this final part of our 3 part series, we will discuss the last steps to getting your data migrated into your new target system.

Step Five: Migrate to Target & Confirm Receipt

CSTORE Migration: If our DICOM Database is the system’s Dewey Decimal System and the DICOM Files are the system’s library books, a CSTORE is the librarian recognizing the addition of a new book and creating a new record in the Dewey Decimal for future location. Study data is stored in the system’s DICOM Database to create a record, and the appropriate images are stored in the DICOM Files — just like placing a card in the drawer and the book on the shelf. This is the final stage of study migration for LAITEK after each study, its data, and its images have passed through reconciliation, validation, normalization, and localization.

Two-Point Confirmation: All PACS/VNA systems are designed to issue a confirmation receipt when a study has been placed via CSTORE. LAITEK, however, goes the extra mile to ensure the study was not only placed where it should be, that it contains all of the normalized, localized data that it should. Simply because we’ve sent the correct information does not always mean the new system received and stored it that way. Once MIGRATEK received confirmation of the study’s CSTORE completion, we run a CFIND against the data we just sent to make sure the new target system can find it, retrieve it, and populate it based on the information we sent.

  • Example: MIGRATEK is moving the Chest PA Lat study for Stephanie DeMarco during St Francis Hospital’s migration. The study passes all the DICOM normalization checks, all necessary PHI matches as it should. During Localization, we remove the St Francis prefix, replace with “0000” and change the order data to the modern “Chest 2 Views.” Once this study passes the test, MIGRATEK sends the study to the new system, and we receive a CSTORE confirmation receipt. MIGRATEK then sends a retrieve CFIND command for “Stephanie DeMarco, MRN #0000254431668599, Chest 2 Views.” The new system successfully retrieves the study and MIGRATEK marks this as a successful migration.

Conclusion

Data migration seems like a complex process and time consuming but enabling the process with Ai tools, the migration process is simplified. Laitek also offers proprietary technology that allows direct access to the database and can bypass the DICOM layer.

DICOM Migration: The DICOM data migration is a slower process, impacts the legacy system and can cause end user disruption when extracting data to the migration server. Proprietary data cannot be converted with this method of migration.

Laitek Connector Migration: Using the connector allows for direct access to the storage and database which bypasses the DICOM layer and has very little impact to the legacy source and the end user.  This also allows the ability to convert proprietary data to a suitable format to be displayed / viewed by the end user.

Enlitic and Laitek combine to improve your data migration, improve the quality of data that is output and simplify the entire process.
